Help provide children from low-income families with a school education

Pakistan has one of the highest number of out-of-school children in the world!

The Problem

An estimated 22.8 million children in the age group of 5-16 are out-of-school. This means that these children do not have access to:

• Teachers
• Role Models
• textbooks
• Elevated brain development
• Behavioural development

These children, deprived of education, are forced into child labor where they work long hours in harsh conditions. Being out-of-school leads to another major issue these children face: They are sold into the labor market against loans their parents have taken.

Without money, education, or purpose, these young children are destined to suffer the vicious cycle of poverty for the rest of their lives.

Pakistan’s gross enrollment rate (GER) in secondary education is at 43 percent. This is the lowest in the region compared to 73 percent in India and Bangladesh and 98 percent in Sri Lanka (UNESCO statistics). This further drops down to 9 percent at the tertiary level—an extremely low percentage by global standards.

Why education matters for Pakistan … perhaps now more than ever before

Today, education is the main driver of development for any economy and helps transform the lives of its masses. The founding father of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, emphasized the need for education when he said,

“Without education, it is complete darkness and with education it is light. Education is a matter of life and death to our nation. The world is moving so fast that if you do not educate yourselves you will be not only completely left behind but will be finished up."

12.5 million children are pushed out of schools and into child labor

While children in the West are trying to fake illnesses to get out of school and stay at home to play games on their personal devices, children in Pakistan dream of going to school but are forced into hard labor to make ends meet. About 9.7 million families in Pakistan live below the poverty line and have to make a heartbreaking decision of either feeding or educating their child.

Extreme poverty compels families to keep their children at home to help with farm work and other income-generating activities. Deprived of education, more than 12.5 million of these children aged 10-14 find themselves engaged in exploitative and hazardous labor. From working with infected needles without gloves in a cramped room to running around cities to deliver products without even five minutes to catch their breaths, children are forced to lead lives filled with harm and discontent.

Although both boys and girls are locked out of education and pushed further into abysmal poverty, girls are disproportionately affected. By grade six, 59% of girls are already out of school, versus 49% of boys.

These unfortunate girls pulled out of schools are then forced into early marriages with men more than twice their age. They are often subjugated to domestic abuse, mistreatment, and are expected to become mothers. Often suffering from life-threatening birth complications such as fistulas. Many of the infants are birthed with both low birth weight and stunted growth. Which is one of the many reasons why Pakistan has the highest infant mortality rate in the world.

Providing high-quality education and support is vital to break this cycle of misery and saving millions of innocent souls from a future we would dread for our own children!

The biggest obstacles to promote education in Pakistan are poverty, lack of both structural and systematic infrastructure, and society’s patriarchal attitude. Which ties young women down with the expectations of a submissive, domestic lifestyle.

The Solution

With the correct resources, Pakistan could educate and nuture its surging young population. Harnessing a tremendous youth dividend that could help get their families out of the vicious cycle of poverty!

In 2014, world-renowned Pakistani Cricketing icon Shahid Afridi launched SAF (Shahid Afridi Foundation). A nonprofit organization focused on improving the conditions of underprivileged communities in the scope of Education, Healthcare service, access to Water, and Sports Rehabilitation.

Shahid Afridi Foundation Schools (SAF Schools) aim to provide education by enrolling out-of-school children, particularly in remote and underserved communities of the country, and providing them with the quality provision of education. SAF’s vision is to empower both the academic and non-academic development of young minds, providing them opportunities for their holistic mental and physical development.

SAF Education has taken on the challenges of eradicating child illiteracy from Pakistan.

Unfortunately, education is not provided in a systematic manner in most schools in major cities and the situation is far worse in rural areas. Most existing schools have dilapidated buildings often run by poorly qualified and badly paid teachers with inadequate furniture and lack basic amenities.

To this end, the SAF school initiative works towards building state-of-the-art schools across the country with avenues of co-curricular activities for students. Creating awareness towards education in the communities through family counseling sessions, and providing professional development and capacity-building training to the teaching staff.

Hope Not Out!

SAF Schools has rescued hundreds of innocent souls from a future of hardship, and gave them hope of a promising and bright life.

With a network of 14 schools across Pakistan:

• 8 in Karachi, Sindh
• 3 in Neelum Valley, Azad Jammu Kashmir
• 1 in Lahore, Punjab
• 2 in Nowshera Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

There are currently 4210 students enrolled at SAF schools. That’s 4210 beautiful children that will grow up to live their dreams, and help their families get out of the vicious cycle of poverty!

Educate a girl, educate a generation

Educating girls is one of the most important investments needed in Pakistan. An educated girl breaks the cultural pattern of child marriage restricting infant mortality.

At SAF it is our firm belief that the progress of the nation is in the hands of its mothers, sisters, and daughters. We want to see every girl getting a basic education because the women of this nation are the future.

Help Shahid Afridi and SAF achieve this dream by sponsoring a child’s education. Invest in them today!
